British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.
The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."
During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
